The astronaut

Identity is a mix of many different elements. The Astronaut shows some of these elements which belong to LGBTIQ+ identities. This is of course only one example: how you feel and present yourself is entirely up to you. Take a look below and discover the different parts!

Gender is further split into gender identity and gender expression. In addition to your perception of your own gender, you can also speak of societal views on gender.

*This is a simplified representation of something that in reality consists of much more, and ideas about it change constantly. If you have an idea how to explain this even better, please let us know.

Genderexpression

How you present yourself to others

Your gender expression is the way you present yourself to the outside world. This is visible, for example, in behavior, clothing, speech, hairstyle and body language.

This can be clothes that are only from the men’s department, or just everything mixed together! Only you can determine how you dress. It can also be pronouns, name usage, hair style or voice.

For example: pants, dresses or everything mixed together!
Or wanting to be addressed as he/him, she/her, they/them, ze/zir, etc.

Sex

Sex

Sex has several meanings. To the government, “sex” means what is on your ID card. It can be: F, M or X (V, M or X, in Dutch). This legal sex does not always have to correspond to your gender or sex at birth. In everyday language, ‘sex’ is often used for someone’s physical sex characteristics at birth.

For example: male, female, intersex

*Sex is about the diversity that exists in physical sex characteristics. This involves all the different variations in hormones, sex chromosomes, genitalia, and secondary sex characteristics (e.g. facial hair, breasts).

Gender identity

Who you really are

Gender identity is who you are and what you call yourself. Your gender identity is a deeply felt personal experience. It can be located anywhere on the gender spectrum and can also be fluid.

Common gender identities are man, woman, non-binary or genderfluid, but there are many more! Check here for explanations of the different genders or contact us!

For example: man, woman, non-binary, genderfluid, trans-man, trans-woman

Attraction

Who you are attracted to

There are many different orientations and they are all valid. For example, you can be bi, straight, asexual, gay or lesbian. You don’t necessarily have to put a label on who you’re attracted to and it doesn’t always have to be the same throughout your life. Maybe you mostly fall for women, but sometimes you like non-binary people. You can, for example, mostly look at people’s character or a certain gender expression. It’s sometimes very specific things that make you attracted to a person.

There are different types of attraction. Romantic attraction is about who you fall in love with. Romantic attraction can be different from sexual attraction. If you are talking about sexual attraction, then you are talking about sexual orientation. Love and intimacy come in many shapes and sizes. The important thing is that you and the other person are on the same page and understand one another.

For example: heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, queer and more
